1 India House Restaurant Chicago Yelp

India House Restaurant Chicago

Indian · Chicago · $$
Insider Score4.6

India House runs a lunch buffet that earns repeat visits from people who treat it as a Chicago ritual. The spread is broad and traditional: butter chicken, dal makhani, and rotating dishes kept fresh and hot through the service window. The room is family-friendly and the format is self-explanatory. Saturday and Sunday bring the widest selection. For a buffet that covers the Indian canon without shortcuts, this is the reliable downtown option.

2 Mild 2 Spicy – Modern Indian Restaurant Yelp

Mild 2 Spicy – Modern Indian Restaurant

Indian · Chicago · $$
Insider Score6.1

Mild 2 Spicy lets the table set its own heat, which matters when spice tolerance splits a group. The butter chicken at medium is the consistent order: sauce is rich, portion is honest, price is reasonable. The cocktail program holds up alongside the food, and soft background music keeps conversation easy. A casual neighborhood room that works for groups without requiring everyone to agree on intensity.

3 Chicago Curry House - Indian - Nepali Cuisine. Yelp

Chicago Curry House - Indian - Nepali Cuisine.

Indian · Chicago · $$
Insider Score4.5

Chicago Curry House runs a daily buffet from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with the weekend spread worth the extra few dollars at $19.95. The Nepali menu distinction matters here: dal bhat and chicken curry anchor the lineup alongside the Indian standards. White tablecloths and a clean room signal care. The owner's presence is felt. The weekday midday window draws a thinner spread; come Saturday for the full range.

4 Dhanteraz Indian Fusion Yelp

Dhanteraz Indian Fusion

Indian · Chicago
Insider Score5.9

Dhanteraz operates in Lincoln Park with a menu that runs from tandoori to Indo-Chinese: the Tandoori Chicken and Gobi Manchurian are strong openers, and the vegetarian biryani is a full, composed plate. The room is casual and the service attentive. Lincoln Park does not have a deep Indian bench, which makes Dhanteraz the practical answer for the neighborhood. The kitchen handles both tradition and the fusion side without losing focus.

5 Indienne Yelp

Indienne

Indian · Chicago · $$$$
Insider Score6.4

Indienne holds a Michelin star and earns it through the tasting menu format, both the vegetarian and non-vegetarian paths. The kitchen works Indian flavors into a composed, course-by-course structure that holds its logic from start to finish. The room is dim and runs loud enough that it skews more date-night energy than hushed occasion dining. Service is polished. At price-four, this is the special-occasion answer for Indian food in the city.

Devon Avenue's discipline, plated at Michelin altitude

Indienne sits far from the Devon Avenue storefronts where Chicago's South Asian cooking usually gets judged, and that distance is the point. This is a tasting menu room, built around a fixed sequence rather than a la carte ordering, with both a vegetarian and a non vegetarian path through the kitchen's version of Indian cuisine. The format alone says something about where Indienne wants to sit: not next to the Devon Avenue thali counters that run on volume and value, but in the same conversation as the West Loop tasting rooms that have made Chicago a serious Michelin city. What the multi course structure allows is control, a dal or a vegetable course built with the same precision as a piece of tandoor-cooked protein, each plate reading as a deliberate step rather than a stand-alone dish.

That is a different proposition than the everyday Devon Avenue kitchen, where a thali covers ground fast and cheap. Here the kitchen takes the time most Indian restaurants do not get credit for, plating lentils and vegetables with the same seriousness as a lamb or seafood course, and building a room around dim lighting and a low hum that reads as date night rather than family dinner. The price puts this well above the Devon Avenue corridor and closer to the West Loop's chef-driven tier, which is a real question for a cuisine still mostly priced for weeknight family meals. Service has been the softer link relative to the ambition of the format, though the execution on both tasting menus has been the consistent strength.

For Chicago diners who know Devon Avenue's range and want to see the same cuisine treated with tasting menu formality, Indienne is a rare local answer. It will not replace a Devon Avenue dinner, and it is not trying to. It is a different order of experience for the same food family, aimed at a diner willing to sit through courses and pay Fulton Market prices for Indian cooking most of the city still eats fast and cheap.

Insider tip

Book ahead since it runs as a tasting menu format, not a walk-in counter meal, and decide upfront between the vegetarian and non vegetarian sequence since the kitchen builds the whole evening around that choice.

6 Nepal House Yelp

Nepal House

Indian · Chicago · $$
Insider Score6.1

Nepal House on Devon Avenue is a shopping-day fixture. The tandoori is the consistent standout, and the chicken chowmein and chilli chicken are the repeat orders for regulars who stop in while running errands along the corridor. The room is small but seats a workable group. Devon foot traffic keeps it steady. For Himalayan and Indian food on one of Chicago's most concentrated South Asian corridors, this is a straightforward stop.

7 Amici Yelp

Amici

Indian · Chicago
Insider Score6.0

Amici is a global arancini counter, not a traditional Indian room, which the menu makes clear. The Mexican Birriancino and rotating global arancini formats are the draws. The build-out is takeout-forward with some seating. The staff is helpful with ordering decisions, and the owner's involvement shows in the counter-service pace. Arancini-as-global-vehicle is a narrow lane, but Amici works it with focus.

8 King Sweets Restaurant Yelp

King Sweets Restaurant

Indian · Chicago · $
Insider Score4.5

King Sweets on Devon Avenue is a Pakistani sweets shop and breakfast counter. The halwa puri is the morning anchor: crisp puris, properly spiced cholay, and halwa that earns its richness. Paya is the other draw for those who know to ask. The sweets case covers the traditional Pakistani range. Family-owned and cash-friendly, this is the Devon Avenue stop for the weekend breakfast that South Asian Chicagoans grew up eating.

9 CAFE NOVA Yelp

CAFE NOVA

Indian · Chicago · $$
Insider Score5.7

Cafe Nova operates counter service with curries made to order, which means a 15-to-20-minute wait is built into the format. The chicken tikka is the signature, and spice level is adjustable at the counter. The room has enough seating to work while the food comes together. Lunch is the primary window. For a South Asian counter-service lunch in the city, the made-to-order model is the differentiator.

10 Himalayan Sherpa Kitchen Yelp

Himalayan Sherpa Kitchen

Indian · Chicago · $$
Insider Score5.6

Himalayan Sherpa Kitchen leads with the momo, which holds up as the strongest plate on the menu. Dal bhat and chicken tikka masala round out the Nepali-Indian range. The kitchen is consistent enough that regulars plan return visits around specific dishes. Service is attentive without being formal. The room is casual and family-accessible. Not every dish breaks new ground, but the momo alone justifies the stop.

11 Essence of India Yelp

Essence of India

Indian · Chicago · $$
Insider Score3.9

Essence of India runs a focused menu built around the North Indian canon: chicken tikka masala, saag paneer, garlic naan. The room is small with enough character in the lighting to make it a workable date-night option at a mid-range price. Regulars order the same three dishes repeatedly, which says something about execution consistency. For a first encounter with Indian food in Chicago, the approachable menu and room size make this an easy entry point.

12 Tuk Tuk Indian Street Food Yelp

Tuk Tuk Indian Street Food

Indian · Chicago
Insider Score4.3

Tuk Tuk focuses on Indian street food: pani puri, samosa pav, and chaat are the menu anchors. The pani puri and samosa pav draw repeat orders from regulars who come back for the same plates. Cash-only is the operating policy, so preparation matters before the walk-in. Service has been inconsistent, which the room's operation does not fully offset. The food is the reason to come; everything else is a variable.

13 Ghareeb Nawaz Lincoln Park Yelp

Ghareeb Nawaz Lincoln Park

Indian · Chicago · $$
Insider Score4.9

Ghareeb Nawaz near Fullerton runs late and runs cheap, which covers its specific purpose. Chili chicken biryani and nihari are the orders that satisfy Pakistani cravings at a price that does not require planning. The room is no-frills. It recently reopened after renovations, and the regulars are back. A short walk from the Fullerton L stop makes it accessible after a long night. The karahi rounds out the late-night menu for those who want the full run.

14 VAJRA | Indian Yelp

VAJRA | Indian

Indian · Chicago · $$$
Insider Score5.9

Vajra operates primarily as a takeout kitchen. The chicken biryani and butter chicken are the consistent performers: the biryani is layered and the butter chicken holds up through the drive home. Diners who show up expecting a full sit-down dining room should know the format ahead of time. For a reliable takeout order on an Indian craving, Vajra covers the core dishes without variance.

15 The KTM Kitchen Yelp

The KTM Kitchen

Indian · Chicago
Insider Score4.9

KTM Kitchen handles the Indian takeout staples with particular strength in the saag paneer and dal makhani, both of which outperform the naan as the table anchors. The tikka masala is solid. Takeout is prompt and the primary format. The upstairs seating area has drawn complaints about temperature in colder months. For a group takeout order that covers the standard North Indian range, the kitchen is reliable.

16 Masala Magic Restaurant Yelp

Masala Magic Restaurant

Indian · Chicago
Insider Score4.4

Masala Magic is operating as a Bangladeshi restaurant, which makes it a rare category on the Chicago map. The tea is the standout: well-made chai that holds up on its own. The food menu is limited in execution and appears to run with minimal staffing, making small orders the practical approach. The kitchen is best suited to solo drop-ins or simple orders. The Bangladeshi distinction is worth noting even as the overall operation has room to grow.

Best Indian in Chicago: 1. India House Restaurant Chicago · 2. Mild 2 Spicy, Modern Indian Restaurant · 3. Chicago Curry House - Indian - Nepali Cuisine. · 4. Dhanteraz Indian Fusion · 5. Indienne. Addresses, prices and what to order.

Devon Avenue carries the South Asian depth in this city, and it does not need defending. But Indian food in Chicago spreads wider than one corridor: Indienne holds a Michelin star in River North, Argyle-adjacent spots and South Loop lunch counters fill in the middle, and the suburban strip mall is where a lot of the everyday work gets done. This guide pulls from across that range.
