Chicago does not have a Veterans Day parade, and the confusion is understandable. The city does hold a large military parade down State Street with a wreath laying at Daley Plaza, but that is Memorial Day, in May. The city’s own published parade schedule for this November lists two parades, and neither is for veterans: one is the Michigan Avenue lights festival on the twenty-first, the other is Thanksgiving. Veterans Day itself is Wednesday, November 11, and the city marks it with a commemoration ceremony. The other half of the day, the free meals, is less settled than the internet suggests. There is no parade, and here is why people think there is
Chicago’s big military parade is Memorial Day: a wreath laying at Daley Plaza followed by a march down State Street, held in May. It is the image most people carry, and every year some of them go looking for the same thing in November. The city’s published parade schedule for this November lists the Michigan Avenue lights festival on Saturday the twenty-first and the Thanksgiving parade on the twenty-sixth. Neither is a Veterans Day event.
What the city does hold on Veterans Day is a commemoration ceremony. In recent years it has been at Soldier Field rather than downtown. The 2026 date and time are not posted yet; the city’s Veterans Day page still carries last year’s details, which is easy to spot because it says Tuesday, November 11, and November 11 is a Wednesday in 2026. We are watching that page and will put the confirmed details here when they go up.
If you want a parade specifically, the suburbs are the answer rather than the city. Several run their own on or near the eleventh.
Free meals: what is actually confirmed for 2026
We only list an offer once the restaurant itself has published it for 2026, and we checked each chain’s own page on November 3, 2026. Five have.
- Applebee’s: a free entree from a seven-item Veterans Day menu on Wednesday, November 11, 2026, dine-in only, one meal per veteran or active-duty service member, at participating restaurants. Beverages and tip not included. This is the 19th year it has run the offer.
- Chili’s: a free meal from a limited dine-in menu on November 11, 2026, at participating restaurants: Chicken Crispers, Chicken Bacon Ranch Quesadillas, the Oldtimer with Cheese, or soup and a house salad. Beverages and tip not included.
- Bob Evans: one free item from an 11-item Veterans Day dine-in menu on November 11, 2026. Its page lists the proof it accepts, the same list as below.
- Red Robin: a free Red’s Big Tavern Burger with Bottomless Steak Fries, dine-in only, on Wednesday, November 11, 2026, at participating restaurants.
- Golden Corral: Military Appreciation Night, a free buffet and beverage from 4 p.m. to close on Wednesday, November 11, 2026, for anyone who served, including the National Guard and Reserves. Family pay regular prices, and there is no takeout.
Texas Roadhouse has told FSR, the restaurant trade magazine, that every location will hand out meal vouchers from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, November 11, good for a later meal through May 31, 2027. Its own site has no 2026 page yet, so treat that one as likely rather than settled.
Not confirmed yet, as of November 3: Denny’s newest announcement is from October 2025, and Cracker Barrel and Buffalo Wild Wings have no 2026 Veterans Day offer posted. The terms rarely move from chain to chain: dine-in only, one meal per veteran, a limited menu, drinks and tip not included, and participating locations only, which matters across a metro this size.

What counts as proof of service
This is the question that actually causes trouble at the door, and the answer is broader than most people expect. Applebee’s published terms accept a Uniformed Services ID card, a Uniformed Services retired ID card, a current Leave and Earnings Statement, a veterans organization card such as American Legion or VFW, a DD214, a citation or commendation, and, simply, a photograph of yourself in uniform. Most chains use a similar list. If you served and you do not carry a card, a DD214 or a photo is usually enough. Call the specific location first, because the offer is franchise-level and the person answering the phone is the one who will be working the door.
