1 India House Restaurant Chicago Yelp

India House Restaurant Chicago

Indian · Chicago · $$
Insider Score4.6

India House runs a lunch buffet that earns its reputation on freshness and range. The spread arrives hot, covers the traditional Indian base well, and the butter chicken and dal makhani are reliable anchors. Saturday and Sunday draw the strongest selection. It is a straightforward buffet room, family-friendly, and the kind of place regulars build a Chicago visit around. Good value for the variety on the table.

2 Mild 2 Spicy – Modern Indian Restaurant Yelp

Mild 2 Spicy – Modern Indian Restaurant

Indian · Chicago · $$
Insider Score6.1

Mild 2 Spicy does exactly what the name says: spice levels are genuinely adjustable, and the kitchen takes the upper end seriously. The butter chicken at medium is a crowd-pleaser, and the cocktail program holds its own. Pricing stays reasonable, which matters when the table is ordering rounds. A reliable group dinner, good for conversation, with enough on the menu to keep both cautious and heat-seeking eaters satisfied.

3 Chicago Curry House - Indian - Nepali Cuisine. Yelp

Chicago Curry House - Indian - Nepali Cuisine.

Indian · Chicago · $$
Insider Score4.5

Chicago Curry House covers both sides of the border: the weekend buffet runs Saturday and Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at $19.95, and the Nepali side of the menu, dal bhat in particular, earns its own attention. The room is clean, the white tablecloths are a deliberate touch, and the owner runs a tight, hospitable operation. The weekend spread is broader and worth the timing.

4 Dhanteraz Indian Fusion Yelp

Dhanteraz Indian Fusion

Indian · Chicago
Insider Score5.9

Dhanteraz sits in Lincoln Park and runs a menu that leans into the India-China border: the Gobi Manchurian is a strong opener alongside the tandoori chicken, and the vegetarian biryani comes in a portion the table notices. The kitchen reads as consistent across the board, and service gets specific credit. A neighborhood room that draws regulars who treat it as their standing Indian option on the North Side.

5 Indienne Yelp

Indienne

Indian · Chicago · $$$$
Insider Score6.4

Indienne holds Michelin recognition and delivers on it through tasting menus, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian, that treat Indian cuisine as a fine-dining framework rather than a footnote. The non-vegetarian menu reads as the more talked-about path, and the execution is called thoughtful across the record. The room is prix-fixe territory, date-night pricing, and a legitimate special-occasion destination in the West Loop tier.

Devon Avenue's discipline, plated at Michelin altitude

Indienne sits far from the Devon Avenue storefronts where Chicago's South Asian cooking usually gets judged, and that distance is the point. This is a tasting menu room, built around a fixed sequence rather than a la carte ordering, with both a vegetarian and a non vegetarian path through the kitchen's version of Indian cuisine. The format alone says something about where Indienne wants to sit: not next to the Devon Avenue thali counters that run on volume and value, but in the same conversation as the West Loop tasting rooms that have made Chicago a serious Michelin city. What the multi course structure allows is control, a dal or a vegetable course built with the same precision as a piece of tandoor-cooked protein, each plate reading as a deliberate step rather than a stand-alone dish.

That is a different proposition than the everyday Devon Avenue kitchen, where a thali covers ground fast and cheap. Here the kitchen takes the time most Indian restaurants do not get credit for, plating lentils and vegetables with the same seriousness as a lamb or seafood course, and building a room around dim lighting and a low hum that reads as date night rather than family dinner. The price puts this well above the Devon Avenue corridor and closer to the West Loop's chef-driven tier, which is a real question for a cuisine still mostly priced for weeknight family meals. Service has been the softer link relative to the ambition of the format, though the execution on both tasting menus has been the consistent strength.

For Chicago diners who know Devon Avenue's range and want to see the same cuisine treated with tasting menu formality, Indienne is a rare local answer. It will not replace a Devon Avenue dinner, and it is not trying to. It is a different order of experience for the same food family, aimed at a diner willing to sit through courses and pay Fulton Market prices for Indian cooking most of the city still eats fast and cheap.

Insider tip

Book ahead since it runs as a tasting menu format, not a walk-in counter meal, and decide upfront between the vegetarian and non vegetarian sequence since the kitchen builds the whole evening around that choice.

6 Nepal House Yelp

Nepal House

Indian · Chicago · $$
Insider Score6.1

Nepal House on Devon Avenue is a fixture for the corridor's regulars. The tandoori is the standing order, called out consistently as the thing to get. The chicken chowmein and chilli chicken round out the Nepali-Chinese side of the menu and draw return visits from the Devon shopping crowd. The room is modest in size but seats a group. Order the tandoori; that is the consistent direction from the people who eat here often.

7 Amici Yelp

Amici

Indian · Chicago
Insider Score6.0

Amici is listed under Indian cuisine in the database, but the menu runs global arancini, including a Mexican Birriancino that crosses the Sicilian format with birria. Chef Alfio and his wife run the counter personally, which shows in the service. Takeout-forward in setup with some seating. The arancini range is the draw, and the staff steers first-timers well. A genuinely unusual spot that does not fit a single-cuisine box.

8 King Sweets Restaurant Yelp

King Sweets Restaurant

Indian · Chicago · $
Insider Score4.5

King Sweets is a Devon Avenue institution for Pakistani breakfast and sweets. The halwa puri is the anchor: crisp puris, properly spiced cholay, and halwa that earns the word decadent. The paya draws its own devotees, and the sweets case covers the Pakistani canon. Family-owned, low price point, and the kind of place Devon regulars stop at on instinct. Weekend morning is the right time to go.

9 CAFE NOVA Yelp

CAFE NOVA

Indian · Chicago · $$
Insider Score5.7

Cafe Nova runs counter service, and the curries are made to order, which means a 15-to-20-minute wait. The chicken tikka draws strong praise and the curry of the day is worth asking about. Spice level is adjustable on request. The room has seating and works for solo lunch. The counter-service format keeps things moving, and the kitchen's output justifies the wait for regulars who come back on the cycle.

10 Himalayan Sherpa Kitchen Yelp

Himalayan Sherpa Kitchen

Indian · Chicago · $$
Insider Score5.6

Himalayan Sherpa Kitchen runs a Nepali menu where the momo is the standout. The dal bhat and chicken tikka masala hold the rest of the menu together, and the kitchen is consistent enough that first-time visitors come back. Service is noted as friendly across the record. The room is casual and family-friendly. Not the kind of place that overpromises; the momo is the order, and it delivers.

11 Essence of India Yelp

Essence of India

Indian · Chicago · $$
Insider Score3.9

Essence of India is a small room with some decorative care taken, stained glass lamps among them, and a menu that anchors on the North Side Indian canon: chicken tikka masala, saag paneer, garlic naan. It draws first-timers and long-term regulars in equal measure. The portions and pricing work for a date-night dinner without the West Loop expense-account register. A reliable neighborhood Indian room that holds its regulars over years.
